2009 Florida BJJ Championship Results
DSC00319.JPGOur team did very good this weekend. That was the first time I sent students to the Florida Championship since I started, for good, teaching BJJ in Florida in July 2007. The results are a tiny fraction of our true potential as you can see that 60% of the athletes that signed up got a medal and 3 students got 1st Place, which corresponds to 25% of the team that represented us. No excuses but I must say that we would probably get 2 or 3 more Golds if the BJJ in Florida were big enough to cover some divisions as 3 of our students had to move up to other divisions.

- Kane Takacs dug the Gold on the 15 years old heavy weight division and is now undefeated for 10 straight fights.
- Joel Bellemare did his homework bringing the Gold winning 2 difficult fights by points. Showed self-control during all the fights. No mistakes = 1st place!
- Ol-Lu Torres, the first girl to fight in the tournament got the Gold with an incredible score of 18 x 0 and an armbar in the end! (WBJJA Orlando)
- Gage Takacs that is 13 years old (5 months of training) had to fight with a yellow and an orange belt 15 years old. That was one of the best fights of the tournament as he still attempted a Fly Armbar on the orange belt on the fist 10 seconds of the fight. Very good skills, courage but more than that: trust and dedication.
- Thomas Bloomfield, had to fight in the heavier division as did not make weight. Dominated in the final match but let it go in the end letting the big guy mount him. Lesson learned and still took a 2nd place.
- Mario Roa dug the 2nd place very well. I think the guilotine was the fastest submission of the day. The kid in the final match was much bigger and there was nothing that could be done. Mario is training for 4 months only.
- Martha Castleberry were bumped to a 20 lbs heavier female division and she fought brave, that was a real battle.
- Joe Dinardi managed to make 3rd place even though he was clearly tired after the first fight. Did a great job!
- Andrew Sorichetti did a great fight. I though he had the guy on the guillotine. Sometimes you need to let it go and move on to a better position. That was a regular white belt match. Learn from that and better results will come.
- Dylan Roa did very good but lost  by 1 advantage a boring fight where the opponent was keeping the guard closed and 3/4 minutes is really fast. Next time we will open this guard somehow!
- Robert Lowenstein never competed and asked to go anyways. Did very good winning one fight.
- Ryan Lee had a bad day getting the strongest guy in his division on the first match. Need to cut weight and go down 2 weight divisions to take advantage of his style.

I think the Florida Ranking we implemented this year was of great help in order to better prepare our athletes. Everyone did a great job and corresponded to my expectations - You sweat and bled to defend and honor our name - There was not a single fight of our students that I wasn't proud. I think this result will help us to be stronger and bigger for the next one. Again, except for Ryan and Thomas all the other students train under 5 months only and twice a week!!!!

Let's start training for the next one, now! Click here for more pics and videos.
